Champs Suzuki fastest in Doha 8 Hours practice
SUZUKI Endurance Racing Team (SERT) clocked the fastest time in yesterday's night practice session of the Doha 8 Hours, the final leg of the 2007 Qatar Motor and Motorcycling Federation (QMMF) Endurance FIM World Championship at the Losail International circuit.
Vincent Philippe had the fastest lap of 2:03.394 as SERT, who have already claimed the championship with spectacular performances in the five previous rounds, finished ahead of the Qatar Endurance Racing Team (QERT) Kawasaki featuring Ivan Silva, Victor Carrasco and Qatari rider Mishal al-Naimi, who finished with a timing of 2:05.908.
Yamaha Austria Racing Team comprising Igor Jerman, Steve Martin and Damien Cudlin were in the third spot clocking 2:06.527. Yamaha Phase One Endurance ridden by Warwick Nowland, Glen Richards and Steve Plater took the fourth place ahead of Bolliger Team Switzerland.
The Extreme Bike Qatar team of Fabrice Auger, Mohamed al-Malki and Mubarak al-Ali were ninth and the QERT Kawasaki Superstock team of Sultan al-Naimi, Sultan Mohamed al-Kuwari and Ibrahim Ali al-Mannai finished in the 18th position.
The Open class BMW Motorrad Motorsport ridden by Thomas Hinterreiter, Richard Cooper and Ahmed al-Abdulla were in the 19th spot.
Earlier, SERT finished with the fastest time in the afternoon's free practice session too, ahead of the QERT Kawasaki and the Yamaha Phase One team.
The QERT Kawasaki had been dominant at the start of the free practice session. However, an impressive lap by Philippe saw SERT claim the best time of the day in spite of a fall by the Suzuki rider which was not serious.
SERT earlier suffered a setback, being reduced to just two riders as Julien Da Costa broke his forearm on Wednesday on a quad bike.
While the 2007 World Championship title has already been won by SERT, the other all-important championships podium places will be fought between four teams Yamaha Austria Racing Team, Yamaha Phase One Endurance, Endurance Moto 38 and Bolliger Team Switzerland.
Today's first qualifying session at this 5.3 km circuit will begin at 10.00 am. The race tomorrow will begin at 2.00 pm and is scheduled to finish at 10.00 pm.
Meanwhile, the 2008 calendar of the Endurance World Championship has been announced and it will have seven rounds as against the six held during the current season.
Estoril in Portugal is the new venue and will play host to the third event in June. Doha 8 Hours will be held on November 8.
The remaining rounds of the championship will be held in Le Mans in France (April 19), Albacete in Spain (May 10), Suzuka in Japan (July 27), Oschersleben in Germany (Aug 10) and Bol d'Or in France (September 20).
